Information management systems

Overview

Information management systems (IMS) in a business context are the people, processes, and software that capture, store, process, and distribute information for decisions and operations. Examples include ERP, CRM, data warehouses, and collaboration platforms.

Key concepts

  • Data vs information — Raw facts vs contextualized, actionable insight.
  • Systems integration — APIs, ETL/ELT, and event streams between apps.
  • Master data — Golden records for customers, products, locations.
  • Governance — Ownership, quality rules, retention, and access control.
  • Change management — Training and adoption when rolling out new tools.

Data flow across systems

Sample: integration requirement (plain language)

When an order is paid in the storefront, create or update the Account and Opportunity in CRM within 5 minutes, including line items and tax totals, so sales can see accurate revenue without manual entry.
